One of our first “sticker shocks” when we arrived in Hawaii was at Outback Steakhouse. Both of our jaws dropped open when we saw the price differences. Since that night, more than 2 and 1/2 years ago, we have gone out for steak twice (other places but similar prices…hence only twice!). We have tried many steak recipes but the one my husband has liked best is a copycat seasoning recipe for Outback. We also like it on hamburgers. I haven’t tried it on chicken but I think it’d be quite good on it, too.
Outback Steakhouse-Style Seasoning
Enough for 4-6 steaks
4 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon coriander
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
Combine spices. Rub on both sides of steaks. Let stand for at least 30 minutes.
I like to mix some of the seasoning with butter. Once the steaks are done cooking, I put a small pat (maybe a teaspoon?) of butter on each one while the steak is resting. Oh my, its the perfect final touch!
Freezer instructions: After rubbing the steaks with seasoning, wrap well in plastic wrap and then place in a freezer bag or wrap with foil. (I double-wrap my meats with plastic wrap and then foil or bag it.)
And a bonus recipe…Outback croutons! These aren’t exactly the same, mainly because I don’t have a duplicate recipe of their bread (anyone know what kind they use?) but these are quite good.
Outback Steakhouse Croutons
2 loaves bread
1 lb butter
2 1/2 tablespoons cajun seasoning
1/2 cup finely chopped garlic
Cut bread into bite-size pieces. Place bread on cookie sheet and toast at 350 until golden brown (about 10 minutes). Let cool. Melt butter until its soft & creamy but not actually melted. Add garlic and seasoning to butter. Blend well & set aside. Combine bread cubes and butter and return to baking sheet. Cook 10-15 minutes at 350 or until crisp.
